About the company, what were their requirements and why?
The organization has established 21 manufacturing sites in India and its strategic goal is the sustainable development fostered by the company’s commitment to engineering, enhanced research and development, and customer focus.
With a turnover of 4,698 crores per annum, TEIL is a leading player with quality and engineered products across defence segments. From the analysis of the annual report of the company, it was observed that the company operates on values such as innovation, quality, efficiency and technology.
They Required translation of a 279-page document (approximately 10,000 words per day) from English to Russian in urgent basis.
Challenges Faced
Absence of Open Files
This is one major issue that we had a lot of trouble with; lack of open files. The client submitted scanned PDFs where extraction of the text, as well as manipulation of translated text, was quite complicated. To handle this issue, we used enhanced OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology. This technology enabled us to digitize the PDF images obtained from scanning which in return enabled the conversion of the text to the word editors for translation making the process faster and accurate.
Short Timeline
The project had to be wrapped up within the timeline of 10 days at the utmost. This indeed put a lot of pressure on the team and all the events had to be planned and executed within the right timeline and without any dilution. Through our team’s hard work and experience, we were able to address this tight deadline without sacrificing the quality of our translations.
Resource Issues
Due to the ongoing conflicts in Russia, there was a scarcity of translators which was a major issue in the continuous projects. Despite these challenges, we were still able to find four native-skilled and domain-expert translators along with the Quality Check Team and 5 Skilled Language DTP designers who worked intensively to meet the tight deadline. They played a crucial role in providing quality work throughout the translation of the documents in the agreed time frame.
Solution Provided
Strategic resource allocation: Despite limitations, we assembled a team of four highly skilled translators to handle the project. This team likely comprised a mix of senior translators with expertise in technical translation and experience with similar projects, along with junior translators for more straightforward content. A dedicated project manager oversaw quality, consistency, and adherence to the deadline.
Technology and Collaboration: Project management software facilitated task allocation, progress tracking, and communication between team members. Translation memory tools ensured consistency for recurring terminology. Specialized tools might have been used to handle the design elements within the scanned PDF.
Quality Assurance: A rigorous quality assurance process was likely employed. This could have involved senior translators or editors reviewing the translated text for accuracy, fluency, technical correctness, and adherence to the original document’s design and layout.
Results:
We successfully delivered the translated document to Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd
within the 10-day timeframe, maintaining the quality and complexity of the original design elements despite the challenges presented by the scanned PDF source and resource limitations.
